Ronald H. DeChard, 84, of Dunkirk died Saturday evening (May 13, 2023) at home following a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was born Aug. 4, 1938, in Palmyra, NY, the son of the late Alexander T. and Gladys (Delisle) DeChard.
Ronald had been employed in the refrigeration and plumbing departments at the State University of New York at Fredonia for 33 years.
He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve and was a member of the Lily Dale Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years. Ronald also worked as a police officer in the Cassadaga/Lily Dale area.
Ronald was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed scuba diving as a hobby.
Survivors include his wife, Carol (Begier) DeChard, whom he married Nov. 26, 1966; two sons, Ronald (Charlene) DeChard of Cassadaga and Jason DeChard of Fredonia; three grandchildren, Katelyn (fiancÈ John Smart) DeChard, Sara (Joshua) Welch, and Alexander DeChard; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert (Maude) DeChard and Warren DeChard; and two sisters, Mary Bruyere and Martha Tedesco.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, May 17, from 4-7 p.m. at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 18, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Barbara Sanson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
