Zona Lou Kurgan

Zona Lou (Mawhir) Kurgan, 85, passed away on Friday, October 29, 2021, in her home at Nettles Island in Jensen Beach, FL, with her daughters by her side. She was born in Westfield, NY on July 21, 1936, to the late Mynferd and Pearl (Dennison) Mawhir.

Zona was married to Paul Kurgan on August 8, 1953, in Westfield, NY. Together, they raised five children. They owned and operated the Shearer’s Men’s Clothing Store in Fredonia, NY, and the D&F Plaza in Dunkirk, NY along with the Fireside Manor in Van Buren, NY. After retiring in 1986, they spent their winters at Nettles Island in Jensen Beach, FL.

Zona is survived by her daughters, Linda (John) Monaco and Lu Ann (Charles) Civiletto, both of Fredonia, NY, and Nettles Island, FL; sons, Tom (Vicki Burgess) of Fort Wayne, IN, and Floyd (Susan Groesch) of Fredonia, NY; grandchildren, Charles Paul (Chrissy Notaro) Civiletto, Katie Elizabeth (Jared Stenger) Civiletto, Alexander Xavier Kurgan, Ivy Rose (fiance Joshua Brune) Kurgan, Cullen Paul Kurgan, and Rian Joseph Budzinski; great-grandchildren, Finley Belle Kurgan and Serafina Marie Civiletto; two step-grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren; sister, Janet Scott of Ripley, NY; brother-in-law, Donald (Beryl) Kurgan of California; along with many nieces and nephews. Zona was predeceased by her husband, Paul on October 9, 2009; and her daughter, Lois Kurgan on January 18, 2020.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:45 a.m., on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at the Fredonia Beaver Club, 64 Prospect St., Fredonia, NY with a luncheon to follow. To post condolences or memories go to: http://mcgrawkowal.com

    So very sorry to hear of Zona’s passing. I was one of the nurses that cared for Paul at Lakeshore, and Zona (like Arizona) was always such a pleasure, a sweet, considerate woman. Your whole family was one of those where you could feel the love. May you find peace with your memories and each other

    Sorry to hear about Zona, My condolences to the family. She was a great Lady, I miss everyone but Life takes us on a journey. RIP
